GLENCOE, ILLINOIS (March 8, 2024) -- AIR Studio debuts its 2024 gallery season featuring artist Melissa Arostequi’s interactive art installation, “Beyond the Surface: Assumptions Unveiled,” opening Saturday, March 16, from 5:00-8:00pm. Designed to raise questions about the conjectures we make based on appearances, the art exhibit challenges attendees to dive into the world of everyday assumptions. Arostegui pairs portraits of eight people of differing genders, ages, races, ethnicities, and sexual orientation with eight of their personal objects, challenging attendees to guess which object belongs to each person. The matches will be revealed in a room adjacent to the gallery, giving viewers the opportunity to discuss their choices in a relaxed, friendly space. “Beyond the Surface: Assumptions Unveiled” runs from March 16 through April 13 at AIR Gallery, 348 Tudor Court, Glencoe, IL. Show hours are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, noon-5:00pm.
Arostequi says her inspiration comes from personal experience: “I've had people make assumptions about me based on my gender and physical appearance. I wanted to shed light on just how much people assume about others. It's something that needs more attention and conversation.”
Melissa Arostequi holds a BA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and most recently her work has been included in shows at the Zhou B Art Center and Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, and "Evolve.Women.Wisdom" at Long Hall Gallery in West Hollywood, California. She resides in Westchester, Illinois.
